Michael Owen blasts Jesse Lingard’s post-goal reaction versus West Ham

Former Manchester United and England striker Michael Owen has slammed Jesse Lingard’s response to his last-gasp winner against West Ham United on Sunday.

The 28-year-old joined the fray with 20 minutes left to play and scored a screamer in the 89th minute to propel the Red Devils to another massive away victory.

Lingard drifted past his markers and curled a sublime effort from just inside the box into Lucas Fabianski’s top-left corner but refused to celebrate his wonder goal.

His post-goal behaviour came out of respect for the Hammers, who helped him get his career back on track and even reach Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for the European Championships.

However, Owen was disappointed with the way Lingard reacted to his second Premier League goal of the season, although he hailed the Englishman’s stunning strike.

“The finish is absolutely sublime,” Owen told Premier League Productions, as relayed by the Daily Mirror.

“The only thing that is poor about the whole scenario is that he doesn’t celebrate.

“I can’t believe players don’t celebrate when they score a goal against their old club, he was only there two minutes.

“If he didn’t want to score, if he’s not that happy don’t pull the trigger, pass the ball, if that’s the case.

“It’s the only thing that lets him down there because everything else is absolutely spectacular.”

Lingard’s goal made the difference between the sides at the London Stadium, but David de Gea turned out to be a real hero for United.

The Spanish shot-stopper denied Mark Noble’s injury-time spot-kick to give his team the all-important three points and potentially cement his place between the sticks again.

With Dean Henderson on course to overcome his injury issues, de Gea looks like he has timed his return to prominence with pinpoint precision.
