Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provides fitness update on four players ahead of Atalanta clash

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided a fitness update on four players ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Atalanta.

The Red Devils have been in a poor run of form in the Premier League and recently went winless for the third straight game with a 4-2 defeat to Leicester City on the road.

Solskjaer will hope for a strong response from his team against Atalanta, who won’t be pushovers. The Serie A outfit are a potent threat with their attacking brand of football.

Ahead of the game, Solskjaer has confirmed that Fred and Edinson Cavani are available for selection after missing the Foxes trip due to their late arrival from international duty.

However, Anthony Martial (unknown) and Raphael Varane (groin) remain on the sidelines. The former has returned to training, but the midweek game will come too soon for him.

Solskjaer told Manutd.com: “Anthony joined in training today, but he’s still not fit enough to join us [for the match].”

“Harry’s not had any reaction, so he’s fine and good to go. We didn’t lose anyone else from the game through injury at the weekend.

“Raphael is still not with us, but Edinson and Fred are back available which is good for us.”

Our view:

United have dropped to sixth in the Premier League on the back of recent results, and they have a tough schedule ahead with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City to face.

Their Champions League campaign has also not been straightforward after a shock defeat to Young Boys in the first matchday. They made up with a last-gasp win against Villarreal.

They now have a crucial double-header against Atalanta with the first game at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

United need to step up after a disappointing showing in midfield and defence against the Foxes.

The midfield partnership of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba struggled at the weekend.

There was a lack of cohesion between the duo, and Youri Tielemans capitalised with regular runs behind them.

It won’t be a surprise if Solskjaer reverts to the regular combination of Scott McTominay and Fred tomorrow.

Harry Maguire looked short of pace against the Foxes after returning from a calf injury, but he appears set to start based on Solskjaer’s pre-match comments.
