Player Ratings: Man Utd 1-0 Spurs

Anthony Martial came off the bench to grab a winner in the final 10 minutes to split the difference between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford today.

There hadn’t been much between the two clubs throughout the game until it began to open up in the final 15 minutes.

Romelu Lukaku had headed against the post five minutes before the Belgian’s flick on put Martial in one-on-one to score our 11th goal in the final 10 minutes of our 10 Premier League games this season.

Here’s how our players fared:

David de Gea 7

Spurs had a few shots on target but none of them really troubled David de Gea who kept his eighth clean sheet in 10 Premier League games this season.  Was one nervy spill in the first half when he collided with Phil Jones when grabbing a cross out of the air but Moussa Sissoko fired the resulting opportunity into row Z.

Eric Bailly 8

Solid defensive performance in his first game in a month as Heung-min Son and the Tottenham attack provided very little threat in opening play.  Solid in the air and kept everything in front of him.

Chris Smalling 8

A rock at the back after a slow start with Dele Alli seeing the only clear-cut opportunity for a side that put four past Liverpool last weekend.

Phil Jones 8

A couple of nervy moments in the first half but after that Phil Jones was a good leader at the back making a couple of interceptions and defensive headers to break up Tottenham attacks.

Antonio Valencia 7

Ben Davies did get a lot of crosses into the box from left wingback.  Antonio Valencia supported us in attack but his crosses weren’t too good.  Did get booked for a dive in the penalty area too.

Nemanja Matic 8

Key in the middle of the park for us again today.  Nemanja Matic was calm and composed on the ball and strong defensively.

Ander Herrera 6

Another hardworking performance in the middle of the park, largely keeping Dele Alli quiet.  Offered nothing going forward though.

Ashley Young 8

Solid defensively today and bombed forward to help support our attack.  Aside from one low cross that Romelu Lukaku wasn’t far from making contact, Ashley Young didn’t provide any other threatening crosses.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 5

Another poor performance on the ball from Henrikh Mkhitaryan again today.  Picked up the ball in some nice spaces but it often ended up with a wasteful pass to concede possession instead of creating a promising attack.

Marcus Rashford 7

Lively down the flank but linked up poorly with Romelu Lukaku.  His pace certainly hurt the Tottenham defence but didn’t provide any useful crosses.

Romelu Lukaku 7

Was getting into good positions but a frustrating day as he Romelu Lukaku was feeding off scraps.  Provided a fantastic assist with the flick-on for Martial’s goal.

Substitutes

Jesse Lingard (26 mins)  5 – Didn’t get involved in the game much aside from blasting a one-on-one well over on a late counter attack.

Anthony Martial (21 mins) 7 – Four goals in six substitute appearances in the Premier League this season now for Anthony Martial.  His finish looked a bit scrappy but it was an excellent run in behind Eric Dier to get onto the end of Lukaku’s flick.

Matteo Darmian (1 min) N/A – Brought on in stoppage time for Ashley Young to help run the clock out.
