Manchester United made it five wins from six in this season’s Champions League group stage with a come-from-behind victory at Old Trafford this evening.
We were almost certain to win the group heading into our final game but Jose Mourinho named a number of players who we expect to start in the derby on Sunday.
Alan Dzagoev scored from close range on a break at the end of the first half to give CSKA Moscow the lead in a first half we had dominated both possession and territory.
Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in a three-minute spell midway through the second half gave us the lead, and ultimately, victory that we deserved.
Here are how our players fared:
Sergio Romero 6
Made one decent saves, didn’t have a chance with the goal and otherwise had a quiet evening until a brilliant save to deny Alan Dzagoev late on.
Victor Lindelof 8
Another excellent performance from the centre-back who has formed a solid partnership with Chris Smalling over the past few weeks. Victor Lindelof had CSKA Moscow’s attack in his pocket and played some good passes from the back.
Chris Smalling 8
CSKA striker Fedor Chalov didn’t get many touches of the ball and didn’t fire a single shot in on goal as we were in control and the back three played very well
Daley Blind 8
Linked up well with Luke Shaw down the left and was composed defensively. Unfortunate to play the Russian outfit onside for their opening goal.
Antonio Valencia 7
Solid defensive performance and offered width down the right. Antonio Valencia saw a lot of the ball in the CSKA Moscow in the first half before going a little quiet after the break and then being rested for the final 20 minutes.
Paul Pogba 8
Saw a lot of the ball, started attacks but wasn’t involved in setting up too many chances for teammates and then produced a sumptuous assist for Romelu Lukaku’s equaliser. Paul Pogba only had one effort himself in 90 minutes. His energy in midfield will be missed on Sunday.
Ander Herrera 7
Looked after the ball well alongside Paul Pogba but once again offered very little going forward. Got stuck in to help make sure we saw the majority of the ball. Ander Herrera protected the back three well and was replaced midway through the second half, suggesting he’ll start versus City over the weekend.
Luke Shaw 8
Excellent performance; offered width bombing forward from left wingback in his first start since April and put in some dangerous-looking crosses. Luke Shaw even drew a save out of goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev who put in a performance for Jose Mourinho to take note of. Appeared to pick up cramp in the final 10 minutes but all three substitutions had already been made.
Juan Mata 7
Some really nice passing in the number 10 role that was capped off with a nice assist for Marcus Rashford’s winner.
Romelu Lukaku 8
Another good performance from the striker who got on the scoresheet this evening to hopefully build his confidence back up before the derby on Sunday. Romelu Lukaku had a couple more efforts on Akinfeev’s goal as he offered a lot of threat to the CSKA defence.
Marcus Rashford 9
Was a real threat to the CSKA Moscow defence before Jose decided to give Marcus Rashford a rest for the final 20 minutes. The youngster really hurt the opposition defence when running at them and capped off his evening with the winning goal. Had hit the post early on.
Scott McTominay (25 mins) 6 – Didn’t get many touches of the ball after coming on but when he did the youngster looked after the ball well. Was on long enough to pick up a yellow card.
Axel Tuanzebe (20 mins) 6 – Came on to give Antonio Valencia a rest for the final 20 minutes and wasn’t greatly tested.
Anthony Martial (18 mins) 6 – A late run out and not enough time to get a shot in on goal.
