Rashford and Martial start, Predicted Manchester United lineup (4-2-3-1) to face Chelsea

Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign at Old Trafford against rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

The Red Devils managed to strengthen the backline during the transfer window with the big-money arrivals of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka but there was little activity elsewhere with winger Daniel James being the only other purchase.

As such, there has been a general frustration with the lack of spending especially in the midfield department, but none of this will matter ahead of the curtain-raiser against the Blues, where Solskjaer will be aiming for a positive start to the season.

Predicted Lineup:

David de Gea should find himself in goal for the season opener, given he is the undisputed starter between the sticks. In the defence, summer signings Wan-Bissaka and Maguire could be handed with their debuts, and we are fancying the latter to prove his fitness, considering he has already taken part in a few pre-season games with Leicester City. Besides the duo, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof should make the lineup on the back of their consistency during the course of the 2018/19 campaign.

In the centre of the park, Solskjaer may consider a more mobile option in the holding midfield role, with Blues boss Frank Lampard likely to field a young-looking attack on August 11. In this case, Scott McTominay should get the nod over Nemanja Matic while Paul Pogba will be expected to partner the Scotland international in a slightly advanced position. Pogba missed the final pre-season friendly against AC Milan with a back spasm, but Solskjaer suggested after that game that the Frenchman should be ‘okay‘ for the Blues clash.

With the recent departure of Romelu Lukaku, Solskjaer may resort to one of Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford to lead the line. However, Rashford has been more successful doing the job over the past year and he is likely to start upfront with Martial slotting into his preferred left-wing position. Besides this, there could be a start for summer purchase Daniel James after a good pre-season, where he impressed with his high-pressing and tireless workrate. He could be accompanied by Jesse Lingard in a three-man attack behind the striker.
