Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand heaped praise on goalkeeper David de Gea’s display in yesterday’s match against West Bromwich Albion.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by the Baggies at The Hawthorns with Bruno Fernandes’ splendid left-footed volley cancelling out Mbaye Diagne’s second-minute header.
The result meant that United now have won just one out of their last five Premier League fixtures.
Both teams had their fair share of scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalise. United’s best chance to seal the match came during the dying seconds but Harry Maguire’s header hit the post.
West Brom’s chances were foiled due to the presence of De Gea. The Spaniard made a fine save to deny Robert Snodgrass before preventing Diagne from scoring in the second half.
Ferdinand took to Twitter to praise his former teammate for his performance.
Once regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world, De Gea’s form suffered a dip after the 2018 World Cup but he has still had some pretty good moments.
With Dean Henderson returning to United following an impressive loan spell at Sheffield United, some thought that the Spaniard’s position in the starting XI would be threatened.
However, the 30-year-old has managed to retain Solskajer’s faith and keep the number one spot.
United’s next match is the first leg of their Europa League last 32 tie against Real Sociedad and it will be interesting to see if Solskjaer starts De Gea or opts for Henderson.
