Manchester United Team News & Preview
Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes to the team to face Burton Albion on Wednesday night in the EFL Cup, meaning our regulars will be fresh for the trip to the South coast.
Paul Pogba, Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all remain sidelined but there are no new injury concerns for Jose Mourinho to worry about.
Luke Shaw got a 45-minute run out in the second half midweek but is very unlikely to face his former side.
The left-back role is currently very competitive with Ashley Young likely to get the nod ahead of Daley Blind after the Dutch international started midweek.
Ander Herrera put in a good performance versus Burton and could be rewarded with a place in the starting XI alongside Nemanja Matic. It was Marouane Fellaini who replaced the injured Paul Pogba in our 4-0 thrashing of Everton last weekend.
Predicted Starting Lineup (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Ashley Young; Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera; Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marcus Rashford; Romelu Lukaku
This team should be more than strong enough to beat Southampton which is why we are the 3/4 favourites with the bookmakers to win this game. If you’re going to bet on United, use a mobilbet voucher to make sure your money goes further and if you want even more value, then I like the look of United winning 2-0 at odds of 7/1. A cheeky £10 bet would return £80, which looks like a great bet to me.
Southampton Team News & Preview
The big news for Southampton is that Virgil van Dijk could make his first start of the season after coming on as a very late substitution last weekend at Crystal Palace. The Dutch international picked up a serious injury at the start of the year and was training on his own over the summer after handing in a transfer request.
Maya Yoshida could be the one to make way to allow van Dijk to start alongside fellow countryman Wesley Hoedt in the middle of Southampton’s back four.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is available again after being granted personal leave to see the birth of his daughter last weekend.
Backup left-back Matthew Targett is the only absentee for the hosts. The youngster has an ankle injury.
Predicted Southamptno Starting Lineup (4-2-3-1): Fraser Forster; Cedric Soares, Virgil van Dijk, Wesley Hoedt, Ryan Bertrand; Oriol Romeu, Mario Lemina; Dusan Tadic, Steven Davis, Nathan Redmond; Manolo Gabbiadini
Manchester United vs Southampton Stats
5 – Southampton have never beaten Manchester United at St Mary’s (D2, L3).
70% – Southampton have failed to score in seven of their previous 10 Premier League games.
Manchester United vs Southampton Prediction
Southampton have failed to score in three of their five Premier League matches so far this season but they have also kept clean sheets in three of those five.
The Saints are still adjusting to life under Mauricio Pochettino and have only scored four Premier League goals so far – three of them coming versus a porous West Ham defence.
All five of Southampton’s opponents at the start of the new season currently sit in the bottom half.
Although we drew 2-2 at Stoke City in our last away game I am very confident we’ll get three points on the road this weekend. Virgil van Dijk is unlikely to be back at his best in what would be his first start of the season, whilst our attack looked deadly again versus Everton last weekend.
Prediction: Southampton 0-2 Manchester United
