Tide turning against Moyes

1206958-25205331-640-360As if being humiliated at home by one of our bitter rivals for the second  time in two weeks wasn’t enough, David Moyes has managed to heap even more misery on United, by claiming that the club should “aspire to be like City”.Nevermind that United are still the Champions of England, nevermind that United’s history and support dwarf City’s and that players outside England even ignored City’s existence until a couple of years ago, Moyes wants us to look up at them.

It’s a new low in defeatism and shows just how abysmally distant Moyes is from grasping what it means to be the manager of Manchester United, a job which he’s likely to keep for the foreseeable future courtesy of momentous wins against football giants of the calibre of Olympiakos and West Ham.

“I think we’ve played a very good side, playing at the sort of level we’re aspiring to,” said the United manager. “We need to come up a couple of levels ourselves because at the moment we are not there.

“I take responsibility for the team and always will do. I have to be the one who picks the players.

“I still think there are a lot of good players in this squad, but some of them could play better.

“I thought it would be a tough year for us, but I hoped it would be much more competitive and we’d be closer to the top of the league than we are.”

After Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure a transitional season was largely what the majority of fans had braced themselves for, but the utterly abysmal campaign Moyes has overseen must surely cost him the job now and, for the first time since he was appointed, he was publicly criticised last night, with a fan in the South Stand having to be carried out of the ground by the stewards, after hurling abuse to the manager.

United fans, match-going reds in particular, have been incredibly patient this season and have defended their manager for longer than many would have thought reasonable and possible, citing a squad in need of investments as the main reason behind his failures, coupled with a difficult summer.

The tide, however, has now almost completely turned, with even the most fervent of Moyes’ disciples incapable and unwilling to formulate excuses after consecutive humiliations at home against Liverpool and Manchester City, when the team failed to turn up, despite having only pride to play for.

Stewards had to prevent “The Chosen One” banner to be ripped out last night. They shouldn’t have bothered, for hopefully they’ll be asked to do so themselves in a month or so.
