Transfer blow for Manchester United as Raphael Varane makes PSG decision

Manchester United have suffered a major setback as Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane would prefer to join Paris-Saint Germain this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been hunting for a world-class centre-back this summer to partner with Harry Maguire.

Varane was seen as one of United’s top transfer targets this summer.

He is yet to sign a new deal which may force the La Liga club to sell their key defender.

Spanish outlet El Confidencial (via The Express) claims that the 28-year old wants to move back to his homeland France to join PSG.

It is also believed that Florentino Perez will allow the Frenchman to leave if a bid of £51.5 million is made.

This is a big loss for the Red Devils, who attempted to recruit Varane in 2011 and 2018.

His departure from Madrid will mean that they will need a replacement.

Jules Kounde, Pau Torres and Aymeric Laporte are the three names on Madrid’s shortlist.

Sevilla want £51.5m to sanction Kounde’s exit and Villarreal will demand £42.9 million for Torres.

Both of these players have been linked for a move to Old Trafford this summer.

If Madrid chooses any of them to replace Varane, United will be left with few options in terms of defensive recruitment.

The Red Devils will have to work faster if they want to sign the centre-back of their choice.
