Manchester United

United’s slim title hopes hanging by a thread.

Manchester United waved goodbye to Old Trafford for this season with a comfortable 2-0 over Swansea.

Goals from Paul Scholes and Ashley Young secured three points for the Reds, meaning that the title will now be decided on the last game of the season.

United took the field after bad news had filtered in from Newcastle, where City had secured three points and, perhaps, secured their first title since 1968.

Following last Monday’s 4-5-1 experiment Ferguson reverted to a more familiar 4-4-2 with Jones, Smalling, Ferdinand and Evra at the back and Young and Valencia coming back in midfield with Rooney and Hernandez up front.

Swansea came to Old Trafford determined to cap off their excellent debut season in the Premier League and started the game brightly and made things difficult for United

United registered their first shot on goal after 20 minutes as Michael Vorm was tested in quick succession by Evra and Rooney.

United found the net after 28minutes as found space on the right and squared the ball for Carrick, whose miscued shot was met by a clever Scholes’ back-heel to put United 1-0 up.

The goal seemed to wake up the fans as well as the team and United could have had another soon after as Hermandez’s flick flew over the bar.

Four minutes from time United had their second goal as Scholes pounced on a loose ball in the Swansea box to set up Rooney.

The England striker saw his shot blocked but the ball fell into Ashley Young’s path, whose curled effort ended up in the back of the net.

Just before half time Smalling went close to add a third with a header but any hopes of United significantly improving their goal difference were dashed in the second half as Swansea defended well.

Sigurdsson tested DeGea early in the second half before Dyer produced an excellent recovery to deny Young his second goal of the game.

Hernandez missed another good chance as he headed Valencia’s cross over from close range.

Dyer and Sigurdsson had two good chances for the visitors but DeGea was alert on both occasions, before United missed two good chances of their own as Valencia and Rooney went close.

Cleverley, Rafael and Berbatov replaced Scholes, Ferdinand and Rooney as the Bulgarian made what could be his last appearance at Old Trafford.
United were clapped off the field by their fans as they slowly walked around the pitch but the atmosphere had a scent of inevitability to it as most fans seemed to realise that the title has slipped away from them unless QPR can produce one of the biggest upsets in Premier League history.

United will definitely fight until the end and at 6pm next Sunday will know the verdict.
