Manchester United Players

Which Players Should United Sell?

There have been a lot of players linked with the United exit door this season After the purchases that have been made this Summer and while some I would sell in a heartbeat, there are others who I think deserve their chance. There are also the ones who you would like to stay but you get the feeling that their time at OT may be up. Here are the players I’m talking about:

Alan Smith: Hard to call, looks like, with the arrival of Tevez, his time may be up and 5 or 6 clubs have shown interest. It’s unfortunate because I think he was a valuable player towards the end of the season. Maybe now he is surplus to requirements Verdict: Sell

Louis Saha: When fit he is one of the best strikers in the league and since it seems he will be fit for the start of the season (although some red-tops will tell you otherwise) then I think he deserves at least one more chance to prove himself after a lot of fans turned on him towards the end of last season.
Verdict: Keep at least until January

Giuseppe Rossi: A great talent which shows why Milan want to sign him, Parma have also shown interest and I doubt he will want to go out on loan again. Ferguson has said that he will get games and the player has said that he wants to prove himself at OT so I reckon that he will stay.
Verdict: hold on tight and don’t let go. Keep.

Gabriel Heinze: Has been linked with Real, Inter and the bin dipper scum but still remains one of the best left-backs out there and, although he isn’t guaranteed to be first choice left back, he has said that his life is “perfect” in Manchester.
Verdict: Let him go for 6 million? I don’t think so.

Kieran Richardson: Waste of a shirt no.
Verdict: sell as quickly as possible

Mikael Silvestre: Holding back the youngsters
Verdict: sell

Gerrard Pique: The talented young defender/defensive midfielder is rumoured to be returning to Barcelona but the player himself has said that he will never return as long Joan Laporta is the president, which is so for the foreseeable future, and SAF said that he will get games.
Verdict: Keep

Johnny Evans: After an impressive loan spell Roy Keane wants him back at Sunderland but he has said he wants to prove himself at United and Ferguson has said that he will get games.
Verdict: Keep

Darren Fletcher: Had a good season by his standards this season but his chances will be limited with Hargreaves’ purchase and has been inconsistent over the last few seasons. However there have been no offers for him and since he was one of the players mentioned in that infamous Roy Keane interview then the Sunderland option may be gone Verdict: Sell if an offer comes in.

John O’Shea: You can’t sell John O’Shea Goal Machine can you? What happens when it’s 0 – 0 at Anfield in the dying moments and we need him? joking aside I think that he is a decent enough cover for the back 4 and I thought that in his first season in the first team at left-back he was great.
Verdict: Keep

If there is anyone else who you think should be on their way put them in the comments.

Perhaps Ji-Sung Park is another player that could be out of old trafford this summer. With the purchasing of Nani and Anderson, his position is severely under threat and the possibility of him missing the beginning of the league campaign also does not bode well for the Korean International.

    the JOS verdict is class

    I agree with that totally
    Smith – 6m
Richardson – 3-4m (if anyone willing to pay that much for him)
    Silvestre – 3-4m

    Thats at least 12m

  3. Aus_Devil

    July 11, 2007 at 10:52 am

If we opt to play with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Hargreaves and Carrick playing deep in midfield it may be handy to keep Fletcher as backup. I agree though, if a good offer comes in he is expendable.

Agree on all others – hopefully SAF does too.

There are unconfirmed reports that Richardson is at Goodison for a medical. Not sure if this is true but judging from your blog, i thought you might be pleased to hear it!

Fantastic analysis!! I couldnt agree more. O`Shea is definitely for keeps. And get rid of Fletcher, he is not good enough. Besides, he is surplus to requirements.

Keep John O’Shea, I have been saying for 3 seasons that his best position is as an attacking mid field player. He has quick feet and can pass/shoot with either foot. Look at the goals he has scored, not the number but how he scores them, all different and taken by a natural goal scorer. Think back.. a left foot chip, first to react, attacking the ball at corners. Keep.

I would add Bardsley to the list of sure exits. And if we get a good offer for Park we should listen to that too. Same holds for either Fletcher or O’Shea but not both.

    Sure exits:

    Smith, Richardson, Silvestre, Bardsley

    Contingent on good offers:

Park, Heinze (if Silvestre is not gone), O’Shea/Fletcher

    Do not touch:

    Rossi, Pique, Evans

  8. C. Ronaldo the Real Ronaldo

    July 11, 2007 at 11:10 am

Hello all United supporters! This season is going to be the greatest ever

I think that they should sell:

    Heinze 8-10m, Smith 6-7m, Richardson 4m, Silvestre 3-4m, Saha 6-7m
Van der sar 2-5m (dont know the prize) (sell the guy!) Ole Gunnar S 1-3m
so thats about 30-40m! that would be great
    Ben Foster
    G. Neville R. Ferdinand N. Vidic P. Evra

    R. Ronaldo O. Hargreaves Carrick Nani

    Rooney Tevez
Sub: Scholes, Anderson(could play from start), giggs, fletcher, o´shea, brown, pique, rossi, dong, evans!park…

This is a good post and I think repeats most peoples views on who is expendible and who isn’t. However, I definitely think we need a big squad this season and there are obvious benefits to having guys who are happy being valued squad players.

Dash – I disagree about Park. I think he’s a very useful squad player. Bardsley is okay but don’t care either way. What about Eagles?

  10. manu4life

    July 11, 2007 at 11:20 am

oshe’a, fletcher, rossi and pique are you dum they will be some of the best players in the world just wait.

  11. Aus_Devil

    July 11, 2007 at 11:27 am

Agree with Unitedinwords – it is important to have players who are happy to play backup. I think the likes of Fletcher, Brown, O’Shea, Park etc. are happy to play this role and not get regular game time. Finding a balance between these types and the youngsters coming through is the key and something SAF has been fantastic at over the years.

    i agree 100%

  13. karl

    July 11, 2007 at 1:02 pm

I feel that if any of the players are happy to stay, keep them all.
If anyone want to go (except for Ronaldo 🙂 ), sell them.

  14. JK

    July 11, 2007 at 1:34 pm

Actually there’s nobody who’s happy to play as a back-up.
It only proves how much players like O’Shea, Fletcher, Park, Brown are devoted to United.

My thanks to these players b.

    July 11, 2007 at 1:55 pm

selling off smith ,richardson, and silvastre will be a good decision

  16. indian punk

    July 11, 2007 at 1:56 pm

Sell smithy, richardson and Silvestre thats it

We need O’shea as backup everywhere one guy who can do anything score goals when needed play in midfield, play as defender and bloody hell even do a good goal keeping what else do u expect the lad to do (He did all that Last season u c)

Fletcher i am not sure abt him maybe a good offer comes then sell

Park is definately needed a gr8 backup (Infact i guess we will even see him start)

Dont know whats Dong gonna Do all season i guess he’s gonna feel really lonely

Rossi/Pique /Evans /Bardsley All deserve chances and we need them to play the carling cup matches in the starting fixtures and mostly matches in december are tough as well

Remember the defender injury crisis so no chances should be taken and franckly these lads take less salary then the big guns so keep them

  17. Kingsley

    July 11, 2007 at 2:00 pm

    Please sell the following:

Smith (reluctantly) – £4m. Deserves regular first team football – won’t get that at United unfortunately.
    Richardson – £2.5m – £3m. A total waste of space with a massive ego.
Silvestre – £3m. Lyon were willing to offer £6m for him a couple of years ago, should of taken it. A total waste of space.

    July 11, 2007 at 2:04 pm

FORMATION against the tougher teams in the prem next season:

    Van der Sar

    Neville Ferdinand Vidic Evra/Heinze

    Carrick Scholes

    Ronaldo Rooney Tevez/Giggs

  19. Michael

    July 11, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Silvestre should be sold- all he does is play the ball long, and is not very good in defence

    Richardson – Goodbye

Smith – should also be sold. Some might say, that he puts in a good effort when he is on pitch. But when you play top striker, you should also be able to grab a couple of goals at times, and Smith hasn’t done that at all in his Utd career.

Brown – too sloppy in defence when the opponent is strong, and no good in the attacking part of the game. Should be sold, if we find a good player for right back.

Rossi – DO NOT SELL – He is one of the greatest prospekts in the world. If you can play Smith, Solskjaer og Saha in attack, there must be room for Rossi sometimes. Why should we sell such a talented player instead of those other three strikers?

Heinze – Good squad player, but I’m not sure he is satisfied with such a role. Not good enough to play in starting eleven, and shouldn’t play in the important games.

Pique – Don’t know much about him, but as i understand he is quite a talent. And my filosofy is, if you have two players at the same level who plays the same position, but one of them is getting old and the other is a bright talent, you should stick with the talent. Hopefully Sir Alex feels the same with more of his players.

    Fletcher – Keep for backup

    O’Shea – Keep for backup

    Park – Keep for backup

    Saha – Keep for backup

And then i don’t know about Dong, if he will ever get good enough to play for Utd

  20. Roonaldo

    July 11, 2007 at 3:20 pm

i’m kinda sad to see smithy go. always saw him as someone who gives his all in matches but football is football after all.
richardson & silves are a must go. fletch i think there’s more to him so we should keep him.

  21. Shaheen Seedat

    July 11, 2007 at 3:55 pm

I think we should keep fletcher. I think many people dont credit him for his worth. Ok…he’s not class as such but a decent squad player. As long as he is happ as being a squad player, we should keep him. We never know…we might have a crippling injury situation with our CMs (hopefully not!).

  22. WCH

    July 11, 2007 at 4:50 pm

Players who are serviceable, versatile and who accept their roles and are ever ready to serve the club when called upon – players such as Fletcher, O’Shea, and Park; should NOT be sold. Why sell when during the very long season, there are bound to be times when we will need their services.

They’ve proven their worth in the EPL as well as in Europe. I’m not saying they are first teamers on a regular basis, but they do fit into the squad and have roles to play, and we do need them.

Goodbye to Richardson though. I can’t wait to see the back of him, good riddance. Goodbye Silvestre too. As for Alan Smith, I would hate for United to play against him again, but if SAF sells him, I trust he knows what he’s doing.

  23. Keith Moses Kaira II

    July 11, 2007 at 4:57 pm

    @ Liamokelly:
Selling Fletcher “if an offer comes in” is the wost idea you have ever come up with in your life. Fletcher was ace last season. He can only get better. And deep down you know it to be true..

  24. Dash

    July 11, 2007 at 4:58 pm

Yes, Park is a good back but where he plays we have Nani, Anderson, Giggs, Ronaldo, Scholes, Rooney, Rossi for 3 positions behind/along the front striker. Plus we might have Eagles coming up the ranks for a wide position. Park is a good enough player for a lot of other clubs and therefore they might be willing to pay a good price for him which IMO ManU could accept.

I would not want any of Fletcher and O’Shea gone ideally but if a good offer for Fletcher (~ 5 mill) arrives we could accept the bid and allow Pique to be the def. midfield backup. My fear is that w/o some first team football the likes of Pique and Evans would not remain at OT.

Bardsley IMO does not meet the standards and should be sold allowing someone like Catchcart from the youth team to be the backup for Neville and Brown.

  25. Keith Moses Kaira II

    July 11, 2007 at 5:00 pm

People we had only 3 natural CM”s last season. The 4th midfielder we used was defender. Now that we have signed Hargreaves where are people getting the dumb Idea we need to sell or even consider selling Fletcher from?

  26. Unitedinwords

    July 11, 2007 at 5:04 pm

Dash – you make some good points but I would suggest Park is cover on the right side of midfield/attack for Ronaldo. Nani is cover on the left for Giggs. Scholes/Carrick and Hargreave/Fletcher would occupy more central positions, leaving Rooney/Rossi and Saha/Tevez to be the striking options with Solskjaer – assuming Smith goes. I’d take Park over Eagles every day of the week but hey its good to differ.

Yeah, Bardsley is good but not great. Cathcart looks promising but think he has Brown/Pique or O’Shea aheead of him for right back . I notice that Evans has played a few games for Ireland at left back, should we be silly and cash in on Heinze…

  27. Keith Moses Kaira II

    July 11, 2007 at 5:09 pm

    Players we should sell
Silvestre: We have better. Plus he hinders our youngsters
    Bardsley: Not good enough
    Richardson: Waste of Space:

    Why these should stay:
Smith: Saha is injured, we need a tall man to call on when necessary
Saha: Till Jan. If he can’t stay fit. ship out.
Rossi: The future of the club.
Pique and Evans: Long term cover for Rio and Vidic
    Park: To good to sell
Martins: A decent talent. Needs More loan football.
Eagles: A really good prospect. could cover Nani long term.
Simpson: Gary Nevile”s long term replacement. Should go on loan again.
Oshea: Great cover for Evra or Neville
    Heinze: A true warrior

  28. Steve from CA

    July 11, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Completely agree with Dash. Although I don’t really feel like O’Shea is a very good player, we need a deep squad in order to compete in all competitions. Having said that, I feel that if an offer came in we should consider.

    Players that MUST go:
Richardson (compete waste of a shirt that could go to another youngster that actually has a career ahead of him).
Silvestre (make room for Evans, Pique, Cathcart, etc.)

Players that should or will go:
    Smith (unfortunately surplus to needs)
    Brown (same thing)
    O’Shea (too inconsistent. see above)
Heinze/Park (only if the offer is WAY too good to pass up)

    neville rio vidic evra
    owen carrick
    ronaldo scholes giggs

foster/vds, pique, evans, bardsley, heinze, fletcher, park, anderson, nani, eagles, tevez, rossi, saha, solskaer

  29. franky

    July 11, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Sell all the French men (yes Saha inclusive, he would hinder Rossi).
Certainly keep Park, the devotion he has shown to be sub is admirable and when he joins the game he’s dangerous.
Let go Smith, he might become a disturber in the dress room, and evt. Fletcher.

O’Shea? Nah, we need a spare keeper.

  30. Sarit

    July 11, 2007 at 7:38 pm

How can you say Tevez on the bench?

And, that formation, eh, I dunno.

    G. Nev – Rio – Vidic – Evra
    Ronaldo – Tevez – Giggs
Rooney (if he can learn how to be a good out-and-out striker)

  31. Liam O'Kelly

    July 11, 2007 at 7:55 pm

I didn’t put Park in because there is absolutely no way he should be sold. He was good this season when he was fit and provided good cover for the left and right flanks this season with Nani in he will probably only cover Ronaldo but I mean if we sell Park and Ronaldo gets injured then we are left with Fletcher as our only right mid and I consider Park to be miles better than Fletcher.

Unitedinwords seems to have a good analysis of how it will set up next season.

  32. Little Dud

    July 11, 2007 at 11:17 pm

i think we have way too many midfielders to keep everyone happy at old trafford next season. fletcher and richardson should go as they wont play enough games and willl block the way for some real prospective talent to break through (and they are both shit). A striker should also have to go because we have too many at the moment – rooney, tevez (hopefully), saha, smith, rossi, solskjaer, dong – the last two wont play that many games I reckon, so i would let smith go as he is in demand and he doesnt score enough goals. The last person i would let go is Slivestre, or ol’ peanut head as i like to call him, he was a bad player when we signed him, and he is even worse now, i have never liked him and he has brought nothing to the club. We should let him go as quickly as possible!

  33. Dash

    July 12, 2007 at 12:59 am

Lets just start by pigeonholing the entire squad (w/o too many of the academy players being blooded) into single positions w/o any departures:

Front-line Strikers: Saha, Tevez (assuming …) , Ole, Smith, Dong (1 selection)

    Second strikers: Rossi, Rooney
    Wide-right: Ronaldo, Eagles, Park
    Wide-left: Giggs, Nani, Anderson, Richardson
    (3 selections)

(One could exchange Rooney and Tevez but can’t put them in the same bracket since I see both starting)

Central- mid: Scholes, Carrick, Hargreaves, Fletcher, O’Shea
(O’Shea played more games in the last 2 seasons here than in defence)
    (2 selections)

Right back: Neville, Brown, Bardsley, Cathcart
    Left back: Evra, Heinze, Silvestre
    (2 selections)

Central defence: Rio, Vidic, Evans, Pique
    (2 selections)

    Goal: EVDS, Foster, Kuszack

This is not considering that we have quite a few players who can play comfortably at 2 or more positions. The squad size is 33 and IMO it is an unnecessarily large squad.

    Therefore must departures:

    Richardson, Silvestre, Bardsley and Smith

    Send on loan:
    Eagles, Cathcart, Dong

    Listen to good offers:
Fletcher – since we have 5 players for 2 positions here and Anderson/Pique are capable of filling up here.

[I am retracting my view on Park, he can play in all positions in the 3 behind main striker and if Eagles goes out on loan he is the best cover for Ronaldo :)]

After all this we cut down our main squad to 25 which I think is a better number to manage 🙂

  34. karl

    July 12, 2007 at 8:52 am

Guys, just remember, the guys you are advocating to be sold are the exact same guys that won us the league last season. And this after everyone – including oursleves – totally wrote them off when the season started. They were good enough to win the league, in other words, these players were better than the players that the other teams had. How come they’re all bad now?
The reason we bowed out of the CL was not because the guys did not have the ability, hell, by that time, we all knew they had it…but becuase they ran out of steam. Milan rested almost their entire squad the previous game, we did not have that luxury. Imagine we rested Rooney, Scholes, Ronaldo for that game?
Now, we have the squad, and you’re calling for heads to roll…how ignorant…
(Funny how come no one’s calling for Ole to be sold? – is this borne out of gratefulness?). How do you suppose those players feel when they browse on these sites?

  35. karl

    July 12, 2007 at 8:54 am

What distinguishes us the fans from Real Madrid’s leaders…
We’re doing exactly the same that they did to their coach, yet we want to take a moral high-ground on them.

  36. CristianoRonaldo

    July 12, 2007 at 9:28 am

besides those already mentioned, i feel giggs should be sold if a pretty decent offer comes in.

the legend is way past his best and u could clearly see the amount of very CLEAR CUT chances he missed. the open goal which he slammed against the bar after good work frm the attacking players, his way off target crosses which rarely meets the boot or head of a teammate and his same old trick of twisting and turning without accelerating past them..

i’d say a figure of 12m will be decent enough.

  37. Red Ranter

    July 12, 2007 at 9:30 am

Well Karl, I think our squad at present does call for some amount of culling. At least three players. It has a strength of around 46 I believe as against Liverpool’s 42 and Chelsea’s 37. I am not sure of the exact numbers but ours is bigger than ideal. As you say, we should have a big enough squad, but not have it too big.

Under the Glazer ownership, I bet they will expect the squad to be trimmed to a certain degree.

  38. karl

    July 12, 2007 at 9:46 am

If no one want to leave…send 4-6 out on loan.
You don’t pay salaries for loan deals…problem solved.

  39. WCH

    July 12, 2007 at 4:00 pm

I’m with karl on this. Fans tend to want strange things, but hey, we know why they aren’t the ones running the club. I can understand that we want certain players sold, but definately not O’Shea or Fletcher, who like karl said, help us win the league.

I still stand on Richardson and Silvestre saying goodbye to us, and with good reason too. One’s just not good enough as a United player, and it’s just time to go for the other, as our youngsters need to be bled in. I’d hate to see Smithy go, and to watch us play him, but hey, if Tevez joins us (please!), and Saha and Rossi stay as backups on rotation, Smith just has to go. And if someone is willing to pay 6 million pounds for him? Goodbye.

  40. Little Dud

    July 13, 2007 at 12:03 am

What would be the point of loaning out players that have no future at the club? Surely getting some money back from them to pay for part of our new players would be a more sensible move.

  41. karl

    July 13, 2007 at 10:20 am

Guys, I understand what you are saying, and you’re right to a greater extent. I just can’t seem to express myself properly on this…
We are fans…not managers. While I believe it is natural for us to rant and rave about who we dream of entertaining us, we should not demand the heads of those who sacrificed for us…we’re fans, not managers.

Any truth to the £5.5mil offer for Richardson?

  42. Kienu

    July 13, 2007 at 5:03 pm

HEHEHEHE……………good post……yup, sell richardson! sell silvestre! sell fletcher! sell saha!

  43. Liam O'Kelly

    July 13, 2007 at 11:53 pm

I think Sunderland have put in a 5.5m bid for Richardson with Man City reportedly interested in making a better offer. Everton were interested but the price got too high. 2 days ago I would have said take 5.5m and laugh our way to the bank but we could get an extra 1 or 2m out of this if it works out. You would think Keano would have more common sense than to buy this overrated piece of crap.

  44. dj

    July 14, 2007 at 12:36 am

doe’s any 1 here support man utd ?
anderson IS a attacking mid ,he is here
2 learn & take over from scholes!
    richardson; bye-bye
fletcher; (done well this season ) 1 more yr
ole; sorry old boy ,go out on top!
silvestre; bye-bye ,time to blood pique & evans.
dong; needs 1yr loan in prem.
smithy ;gives 100%, 1yr with a chance, in the right games.
saha; till jan ;if injured time 2 let go.
rossi;STAY’S give him the chance he deserves!
know ur facts or dont write!!

  45. Liam O'Kelly

    July 14, 2007 at 12:34 pm

    @ dj

How exactly is Rossi supposed to get a chance when Saha, Smith, Rooney and Tevez all in front of him for positions? We need to sell one of them if we want Rossi to succeed and while I would love to keep both of them I don’t want to drive Rossi out either.

  46. Theshen

    July 17, 2007 at 11:06 am

I think United should hold onto Smith. He’s a fantastic player with a lot af drive and determination.Brown should be on the transfer market. We’ve got some good young talent that can assist at the back.

  47. Napoli

    July 31, 2007 at 7:08 pm

Silvestre is very handy to have as a back up remember, so I wouldnt sell him, though if an offer of lets say £10m comes in then please, he can go and I will back his bags for him!

Richardson – Goodbye mate! £5.5m, Keano has spent a bit more than he should have, but hey!

Smith – Smith is also good backup to the man utd squad but he wants 1st team football and man utd already have good backup in Rossi, Dong, Saha, Solskjaer, Anderson can also play up front…so my verdict is for him to be sold but only for a decent price, £8m will do!

Brown – Keep, a big keep, he provides good performances when he is needed, and is quality backup, he is a true red devil, he doenst play much and yet he wants to stay!

Rossi – I wouldnt sell Rossi, he is a good young talent and needs to be given games at united to show us what he can really do, I think we should keep him!

Heinze – Heinze is a very solid player, brilliant for the english game but he deserves 1st team football and he isnt getting that at the moment and if he is disrupting the dressing room then I think he should leave, we could get about £7m for him i’d think!

Pique – I live in Gibraltar and I reguarly travel to watch some of the la liga games, so when he was on loan at Zaragoza I saw him play in a right back role, he can also play at centre back too, he is a very good young talent but needs a bit more of adapting to the english game! A strong keep!

Fletcher – A handy player to have, I didnt like him at all at first but now, blimey, he is turning out as Sir Alex would have liked him to, Im extremely happy with the progress he has made in the last couple of seasons, he was amazing against Roma in the 7-1 win! Very good player to have! Keep!!!

O’Shea – Keep, good back up, very versitile player, can play all across the defence if needed, defensive midfield and goalkeeper if needed hahahaaaa! Keep though, a handy player to have is John!

Park – Keep! He works his bollocks off, he never gives up, he is one of the most determined players I have ever come across and he also brings in good revenue from Korea! Its nice to have a South Korean in the united squad! Keep!

Saha – Keep!! Seeing as Smith could be heading out, Saha does get injured quite often and people may not like that but he scored tons of goals at the beginning of the season, he was ready to go and hopefully he will be challenging Rooney and Carlos Tevez for a place in the line up next season!!

Dong – Hes a definite keep, Ive seen him when he was at Antwerp, a very sharp, pure striker! Keep!!
